Periodontal care, or the care of your gums, is just as important as taking care of your teeth. Dr. Eddleman and our team are committed to providing excellent comprehensive periodontal therapy.

What is Periodontal Disease Therapy?

Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, is an inflammatory condition that affects the gums. It is caused by a build-up of plaque, which causes inflammation of the gums and the surrounding bone. Gingivitis, or the earliest stage of gum disease, is the precursor of periodontal disease. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to serious oral health issues, such as tooth loss. According to the CDC, just under 50 percent of all adults aged 30 years or older show signs of gum disease. At Eddleman Dental, we take gum disease seriously, which is why we provide periodontal disease therapy.

Signs And Symptoms Of Periodontal Disease

Gingivitis, as the earliest stage of gum disease, causes red, swollen and irritated gums. Periodontal disease, on the other hand, often does not come with any signs or symptoms. However, here are a list of possible symptoms to look out for:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Red/swollen gums
  • Bad breath
  • Pain when flossing or brushing

  • Loose teeth
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Pain when chewing

Risk Factors For Periodontal Disease

While poor oral hygiene is the most common cause of periodontal disease, there are several other risk factors that may contribute to periodontal disease. These risk factors include:

  • Genetics
  • Poor nutrition
  • A history of smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Stress

  • Immuno-deficiencies
  • Certain medications, such as blood pressure medication
  • Connective tissue diseases
  • Previous history of active periodontal disease

How To Lower Your Risk Of Periodontal Disease

In order to lower your risk of developing gum disease, we recommend sticking to a healthy diet, brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing every day. Good oral hygiene is key, which is why we also recommend that you visit us twice a year, or every six months, for regular dental check-ups.

Periodontal Disease Therapy: Treatment Options

At Eddleman Dental, our goal is to provide periodontal disease therapy to help manage your gum disease. We aim to help reduce any bleeding or inflammation and prevent any further progression of the disease. There are two main treatment options to deep clean the teeth and gums. These include:

Scaling and root planing is a cleaning procedure in which plaque and tartar are removed from below the gumline and the tooth roots are smoothed. This helps to eliminate bacteria and promote the healing of the gums. During the procedure, we will numb one side of your mouth with a local anesthetic, as we usually treat one side of the mouth at a time. Then, we will perform the scaling, or the cleaning of the gumline, and the planing, or the smoothing of the tooth roots.

Periodontal prophylaxis is a thorough dental cleaning. We recommend that our patients with gum disease visit us every three months instead of every six months for periodontal prophylaxis. During those visits, we will perform a deep clean with an ultrasonic scaler, which removes plaque more effectively than a manual plaque scaler. We will also take measurements in order to best assess your bone and tissue health.
