Dentures in Monroe, Louisiana

Custom-created to Replace Missing Teeth

Dentures are the traditional method of replacing missing teeth and the surrounding tissues. At Eddleman Dental, we offer several different types of dentures, including conventional, immediate, complete or partial and implant-secured. Dr. Eddleman and our team will help you select the best choice for your new smile.

What Are Dentures?

A denture is a prosthetic oral device that is custom-created to replace missing teeth. Made of acrylic resin or metal, dentures can either replace all of the teeth or some natural teeth. At Eddleman Dental, your denture is customized for your smile. It will look and function like your natural teeth, allowing you to eat, speak and smile with ease again.

Benefits Of Dentures

Replacing missing teeth can reduce your risk of gum disease and other serious problems such as gum recession, bone loss, bite problems and more. Ultimately, replacing missing teeth benefits your overall dental health. Replacing your missing teeth can:

  • Restore your ability to eat and chew

  • Improve your speech

  • Boost your confidence

  • Prevent sagging of the face

  • Enhance the appearance of your smile

Types Of Dentures

The denture type that you need will depend on your personal circumstances. Options include:

Dentures

This type of denture can be placed immediately after the teeth are extracted. An advantage of this option is that you don’t have to live without teeth. A possible disadvantage is that your gums and bones can shrink over time, causing them not to fit properly. If the fit does shift, they will need to be re-fitted or even replaced.

These are placed about a month after your teeth are removed, allowing for your gums and bones to heal properly before your prosthetic device is placed.

A complete denture replaces all or most of the teeth.

Partials replace some but not all of the teeth.

Dental implants provide a stable foundation to anchor upper and lower dentures. They can either be attachable or permanent, but are typically sturdier than traditional ones. Patients with this type of prosthetic may also be able to eat a wider variety of foods than patients with the traditional type. The implants also fuse to the jawbone when they are placed, which helps prevent bone loss over time. For this reason, these are often a good choice for patients who have lost all of their teeth.

The Denture Procedure

At your consultation, Dr. Eddleman will examine your mouth, discuss your oral health history and identify your goals. From there, the process to receive your denture typically includes:

  • Extractions: Remaining natural teeth may first need to be removed. In some cases, immediate dentures may be provided on the same day as extractions, allowing you to have teeth throughout the healing process.

  • Impressions: Dr. Eddleman will take impressions of your gums and any remaining teeth. These impressions help create a mold for your devices, ensuring a custom fit.

  • Model Fitting: A wax model or plastic version (known as a try-in) is created based on the impressions. This model will allow you to see how your devices will look and feel. To ensure a proper fit, Dr. Eddleman will make adjustments at this stage.

  • Creation Of Your Dentures: Once the model is approved, your final dentures are made. Your prosthetic device is completely customized for you—the artificial teeth are positioned to resemble natural teeth, and the color is selected to match your existing teeth.

  • Fittings: The completed device is fitted in your mouth. Dr. Eddleman will check the fit, bite and appearance, making any necessary adjustments to make sure your devices are comfortable and functional.

Adjusting To Your Dentures

It may take time to get used to your new smile. However, most patients adjust to your devices fairly quickly. Initially, you may experience increased saliva, mild soreness and difficulty speaking or eating. These issues typically go away with practice and time.

Attend all of your follow-up appointments as directed and schedule an appointment if they become loose or uncomfortable. These appointments allow Dr. Eddleman to monitor the fit and condition of your dentures and make any necessary adjustments.

Taking Care Of Your Dentures

Properly caring for your dentures can help them last for a long time. To clean them, remove them and brush them gently with a soft toothbrush. Rinse them after you eat and soak them overnight to prevent the build-up of food particles and bacteria.
